Introducing VidCon Australia! September 9-10, 2017

What is VidCon?

VidCon is the world’s largest event for everyone who loves online video and is excited about its potential. Video is still an incredibly young medium, but it has already become a powerful, transformative, global force. VidCon is at the center of that revolution.

The first VidCon was run in July 2010 by the Vlogbrothers, John and Hank Green. Already a pair of online celebrities, they started VidCon as a place where people who had only ever met on the internet could meet and connect in real life. It was a hit, and became a popular annual event in Southern California.

In 2017, VidCon is expanding out of North America and into the world, and a key part of that expansion is the debut of VidCon Australia in the cultural capital of Melbourne. This inaugural event will be held on September 9 and 10 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Made for both the creators and viewers of the online video industry, VidCon Australia will be a celebration of everything that makes this medium awesome. This emerging industry is wildly diverse and rapidly evolving, and VidCon Australia, presented with support from the State of Victoria, aims to bring together a global community that believes online video is the most important cultural force since the motion picture.

Who is VidCon Australia for?

In a word: everyone!

VidCon Australia has a unique design that allows everyone, no matter their interests, to easily find the content and activities suited to them. This is done by building the whole event around three tracks, which gather related topics together—kind of like channels!

The Community Track is for fans who want to come to VidCon and have an amazing time. Everything in the Community Track is about having fun, making friends, and being entertained by the best online video personalities in the world.

The Creator Track is for creatives who want to learn how to make higher quality content and find a bigger audience. It includes workshops, Q&As, and other activities that give content creators the opportunity to tap into the skills of the most successful professionals in the world’s newest entertainment medium.

The Industry Track is tailored to corporations and brands seeking to forge business relationships with some of the world’s best-known streaming video personalities. It focuses on introductions, networking events, information and training sessions and other activities centered around making connections.

What’s cool about it?

Online video is transforming the way we engage with the world, and VidCon has placed itself at the
epicentre of this remarkable new medium. Regardless of your interest in online video – whether you’re an established identity, a rising star, or simply a fan – VidCon will connect you to people with similar passions, as well as businesses and organisations outside the medium who want to learn valuable lessons from this rapidly evolving and developing technology.

For the first time in this country, VidCon Australia brings all of these people together under one roof to celebrate the medium they love, but also to forge new connections and friendships, planting the seeds for the next generation of creators. It’s a party, it’s a mixer, it’s a conference, it’s an expo, and it’s so much more. From live-streaming gamers through to creators of tightly edited and produced digital films, VidCon Australia is the place for you.

How do I get more information?

Here is pretty much every resource you’ll need to get up to speed:

Online video is impossible to pin down.

One year’s VidCon attendee is the next year’s superstar. Entire genres are created in the time it takes a full season of TV to meander its way to conclusion. Creating an event for something so wildly diverse and rapidly evolving is an impossible task, but we attempt it anyway. And we do it with excitement, because we believe that online video is the most important cultural force since the motion picture. We are in the very early, defining moments of an extremely powerful global force.

Over the last seven years, VidCon has grown from 1400 people in the basement of a hotel to 30,000 people gathering at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, and we’re very excited to package up the magic to bring it to Australia in 2017. Melbourne is a vibrant, innovative, creative city, and we’re thrilled to see how VidCon lives and breathes in this new home.

Along with you, we want to foster this democratization of creation that has only just begun, and which will be the defining story of this era of media. We hope to see you there.
